He couldnât remember ever being on a date like thisâstanding in front of a food truck on the beach road, ordering tacos and sodas. But then, heâd rarely gone on an actual date. Glancing to the side, he couldnât help but grin at Shilohâs excited clap when he turned to hand her the small cardboard box filled with nachos and two tacos, along with a soda. Taking his own, they walked out onto the sandy shore to the blanket sheâd already placed on the sand.
Sitting next to each other, they devoured their dinner, laughing as the sauce dripped off their chins and fingers. Her eyes shone, the dark clouds in their depths no longer visible. After eating, they wiped their hands on the little wet wipes provided, and he took the trash to the receptacle.
Plopping back down on the blanket, he made sure to sit right next to her, and with their legs stretched out in front of them, he felt the electricity move through his body as their legs touched. She was wearing jeans, and it struck him that it was the first time heâd seen her in jeans. Other than the modest bathing suit sheâd worn earlier that showed off her beautiful curves. Sheâd managed to hold his attention in a way that no other woman in the skimpiest of bikinis had ever managed to do. And he knew it was all because it was her.
âYou look beautiful tonight,â he said. âOf course, you always look beautiful.â
Her hands smoothed over the cotton of her pants. âItâs been a long time since Iâve worn anything other than a dress or skirt. When I was little, I wore pants or shorts all the time.â
âWas it a personal choice?â He wondered if her husband had demanded that his wife wear dresses.
She shook her head and sighed. âI suppose you know thereâs more to my story than just what Iâve told.â
âIâve said it before, Shiloh, but I truly want to know everything about you. I hope you feel like you can tell me anything.â
A myriad of expressions crossed her face, and again it dawned on him how different she was from other women heâd been with. She didnât hide her emotions. She didnât throw out coy comments, attempt to be intriguing, or flirt to demand attention. As he stared, he could see doubt and fear move through her eyes, slowly replaced by a resolute determination. He held his breath, praying sheâd give him more.
âWhen the accident occurred, our community was reeling in grief. It was a time of unbearable sorrow. Looking back, I can see how our grief made us vulnerable. Our questions made it easy to accept answers.â She shifted on the blanket, crossing her legs and staring out over the bay. âItâs so beautiful here. It was beautiful in the mountains, also. But not when⦠when things changed. There was no beauty anywhere⦠just bone-wearying grief. But a voice came out of that timeâ a voice that held answers and gave direction.
